From Athlete to Physiotherapist

For Tej Basra, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are more than a profession — they are something he has experienced firsthand.

A lifelong athlete, Tej grew up competing in multiple sports, including representative ice hockey, basketball and soccer, before continuing his basketball career in Australia while studying at Bond University where he completed his Doctor of Physiotherapy. He continues to compete in men’s ice hockey and basketball today, giving him a firsthand understanding of the physical demands of sport and the importance of staying healthy, strong, and confident in your body.

His passion for rehabilitation became particularly personal after suffering a complete ACL rupture and grade 2 tears at his MCL and LCL. Rather than allowing the injury to define what he could do, Tej committed himself to the rehabilitation process and successfully returned to his pre-injury level of sport without undergoing surgery.

That experience and similar experiences from previous injuries had a major influence on the physiotherapist he is today. It gave him an appreciation not only for what the human body is capable of, but also for the importance of progressive rehabilitation, objective testing, strength development, and having a clear plan for returning to sport.

Rehabilitation Meets Performance

Tej’s approach to physiotherapy is built around a simple principle: getting out of pain is only the beginning, once you’re out of pain the goal is to build strength, capacity and resilience to prevent future injuries.

His goal is to identify the factors contributing to an injury, restore movement and strength, and then bridge the gap between traditional rehabilitation and the physical demands of everyday life, training, and sport.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, Tej takes an active, individualized approach to rehabilitation. Treatment combines education, hands-on therapy, progressive exercise, strength development, movement retraining, and objective measures of progress to help patients understand their injury and take an active role in their recovery.

Whether someone wants to return to competitive sport, get back into the gym, recover after surgery, manage a persistent injury, or simply move without pain, Tej believes rehabilitation should be built around what that individual wants to get back to doing.
